I have read both books, and can not pick a favorite. I love Twilight, because it's a wonderful love story with a moodier undertone, and a solid plot, just like Harry Potter. And I love Harry Potter because it was all I had as a child. Even now I am drawn in by it's continuous battle of good over evil and all the twists she will throw in now and again.
But neither would have been published if their publishers did not think them excellent writers. Both stories appeal to people, even if the groups are different. There are extreme fans of both, who may douse their boyfriends in glitter or get a Dark Mark tattooed on their arm.
But seriously, do people have nothing better to do than sit around and ridicule those who prefer Twilight or Harry Potter? Arguing and taking stabs at what people love is no way to say what's better.
Yes, Harry Potter is fantastic. Twilight is amazing. Both appeal to our senses though, giving us hope that there is a world we do not know about, that we only dream about. Harry Potter makes us believe a few silly words can fulfill a fantasy. Twilight makes us believe that people can fall in love even if they are different and uncontrollable things threaten to end it. It depends on who you are, whether you enjoy being enchanted by a boy struggling to save the wizarding world as a mere teenager and dealing with the pains of love, life, and loss, or you are entranced by an average girl who falls in love with an unremarkable vampire and is drawn into that dark world that captures the dark and hidden parts of our unconscious.
I'm truly just sick of hearing this ongoing fight and wish everyone would stop this battle. Both are literary works of art. Yes, Twilight does read a little like a fanfic practically. And Harry Potter has the same plot every book involving the same villain every time. But that is the price of being an author: you never know how the book will turn out or how the public will react to said book. They wrote their thoughts and feelings, pursued their dreams, and sent out their books just hoping that maybe they'd be accepted and loved.
So, whether your thing is wizard boys with scars or sparkling male vampires, stop bashing the other team and MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIVES. There will always be someone who puts glitter on their boyfriend, names their dog 'Jacob', and legally changes their last name to 'Cullen'. There will always be someone who gets a Dark Mark tattoo, or dyes their hair bubblegum pink, or draws a lightning bolt on their forehead. So what? Welcome to the 21st century where crazy stuff like that happens. It's called loving something to the bitter end and enduring all that comes your way because of it.
